What's SOAP for the Soul?

Soul SOAP is something you should do!
What it is:

  •  S stands for Scripture. Read a section of the Bible. You may get a Bible reading schedule off the internet so you know where to go. Write down the referance in a journal. Here's a SOAP reading schedule we like. It even has links to the verses so you can read the Bible on the web!

  •  O stands for observe. What do you think it means? Write it down.

  •  A stands for apply. What use is soap if you never use it to clean? Apply the Scripture to your life and what you struggle with. Write it down.

  •  P stands for pray. Pray that God would strengthen you, that you would resist temptation, that you would remember what He has taught you, ect. write down your prayer.
Now take 10 minutes out of your day to simply Do it!

S: 1 Corinthians 6:12 "Everything is permissible for me"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"—but I will not be mastered by anything.
O: Just because you can do something that's not against the law--say, watch a questionable TV show-- doesn't mean you should. Even though you're not breaking the law, it might not be healthy for you spiritually.
A: I tend to make the right decisions, but this is really a good reminder to make sure that the decisions I make are good ones.
P: Lord, I have been caught in the trap of doing things I'm allowed to, but really might not be good for me. Please help me make good decisions that please you. In Jesus' Name, amen.

O: In this versus God makes a convent to Noah that He will never flood the earth again. The the rainbow promises that.
A: God keeps his promises. He is always faithful even when we are not. I shouldn't loose faith in Him.
P: God, please help me to not to loose faith; to remember you promises. In Jesus' name, amen.

S: Luke 18:15-17 (The Message)
O: We need to believe and trust Jesus like little children trust.
A: For some reason, once we get past the age of about 6, I think we tend to doubt.  Doubt God's love, doubt God's exsistance. I need to trust like a child would.
P: Lord, there are times when I doubt you. Please forgive me, and give me the courage to trust you. In your Name I pray, amen.

S: Romans 12:10
O: We're to truly love our fellow Christians, and care more about their happiness then we care about ourselves.
A: Often my problem is not loving people and being prejudiced.
P: Lord, I'm sorry for being judgmental and uncaring. Please forgive me and help me to love your children as you love me. In Jesus name, Amen.

S: Romans 12:1
O:I think God is telling us here to give everything you are and give it all to him for His glory.
A: I need to live more of a life that reflects Him and I need to be a living sacrifice to Him because He deserves that much. Doesn't He?
P: God, please help me to be a living sacrifice to you. In your name I pray. Amen

S: Psalms 37:4 "Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart."
O: I think it means that if we love Him, he will tell us what we want to do. He knows the thoughts we have that we aren't even aware of.
A: When I have a decision to make, I never know what I want. But if I spend time with Him, He will show me things about myself that even I don't know.
P: Lord, I ask that you would reveal to me in your own timing what I should do with my life. I know I tend to fret about decision making; help me to remember to come to you. In Jesus' Name, amen.

S: John 1:1-5
O: God, through John, is trying to explain how Jesus (the Word) is God, was with God and is all powerful. Jesus is light that shines in the darkness. He lights our path.
A: I think this passage means that we need to rely on Jesus to help us find our way through a dark world.I couldn't choose a better guide than One who is life, light, and very, very powerful!
P: Lord thank you for being our light. Thank you for showing us how to live. Thank you for creating everything the way you did, and thank you for salvation!

S: Exodus 20:3
O: We shouldn't have any other gods before the one true God;  its not as if we are going to go out to the craft store and get some clay to make a idol, but its things like sports or money that we make idols out of.
A: We all make idols;  sometimes my busyness gets in the way of God and its creates an idol. This verse encourages me to not have any idols ever! I think that we can prevent other things from being are idols by spending more time with Him.
P: Lord, please help me to not have any idols and to keep focused on you. Amen

O: It means that we need to do good to everyone, especially our fellow Christians.
A: Always be ready to help others.
P: Dear God, Thank you for this day. Please help me to be on the lookout for opportunities to help other people and to share about You. Amen

S: Romans 4:7-8
O: We who are saved in Christ are blessed, are sins will forever be forgiven and they will never be
counted against us. That is so wonderful. Our sins are only forgiven if we except Christ and the fact
that he died on the cross.
A: We should tell others about the gift of everlasting life, the gift that the Lord will never count their
sins against them. We should minister to them we ever we have a chance.
P:
Dear Lord thank you for forgiving our sins and transgressions, please help me to minister this
message to others, Amen

S: Luke 1:37
O: It means that God is a pro at making Miracles happen.
A:  God can make anything happen and you don't have to worry.
P: Dear Lord, Please help me to believe and not have to worry about what will happen because I know you are there and will help me when I fall. Please help me remember that you are a awesome God and you can do anything. Thank you for everything you have given me and my family. In Jesus Name, Amen

S: James 1:12
O: I think God blesses those who suffer and are persecuted for his name.
A: I think that to be persecuted for Christ is worth it, but I've never experienced it. This verse reminded me how blessed we are to live in a country that allows Christian churches.
P: Lord, thank you for giving us this country, with the freedom to worship You. Please give those who are being persecuted strength. In Jesus Name, Amen.

S: Luke 8:16-18
O: Jesus is telling us in this verse that we shouldn't hide our faith.
A: I don't know if I struggle with hiding my faith, but I certainly don't always put it out in the open. One of the ways I should be exibiting my faith is by doing kind acts of love. That's something I need to work on, loving.
P: Lord, please help me put my lamp on a lamp stand, by showing your love. I pray that this website may be a lamp on a lamp stand. Thank you for being with me all the time; always right there. In Jesus' Name, amen.

S: Proverbs 30:4
O: God is all these things and and Christ is his son, and all people truly in Christ should know that.
He is mighty enough to do all these things. This verse makes me really think about the sheer greatness
of Him.
A: If he can do all these things we should worship and praise him more in our daily life. We should
be in more awe of Him and respect Him more because no one else can do anything like that.
P: Lord please help me to remember to respect you more and remember to worship and praise your
greatness. I'm glad that I know your name and the name of your son, Amen.

S: Genesis 2
O: It means that God is in charge, and that He created me in his own image.
A: It means God created me perfectly and that I shouldn't complain over how He made me, because it's an insult towards Him, even unintentionally.
P: Lord, please help me to be happy with how You made me. Thank you for the health You have given me and my family. Please let us remember Your blessings. In Jesus' name , amen.

S: Isaiah 51:7-8
O: God will give good things to those who seek after Him. He encourages us in this chapter.
A: God is our salvation and help... He makes things right.
P: Lord, help me to remember to call on you. Thank you for being there for me. Thank you for your gift to me, deliverance from sin and shame. Amen.

Some extra tips...

  1. Follow a good reading chart. We each follow a different reading schedule, so there is no required pattern. But, a reading schedule can really help.
  2. On your reading schedule, check off the days you've SOAP'd. This will serve as a great visual and reminder on whether you've spent time with your BFF, God! Here''s a reading schedule we like from our friends in Canada.
  3. Use a bound journal. (Decorate it with your style!)  SOAPing in a 3-ring binder or on any ol' page you find is like taking pictures of your best friends and then scattering those pictures in the wind. You'll be richly rewarded when you look back at previous days and months. God is faithful. He will build you! You'll see, and the bound journal is a good habit to start.
  4. Make God your BFF, keep this up with a sincere heart and He will become so. Strong friendships are built by spending time together. How else? Think of your special friends. If you don't email, call, or hang out, the friendship often fades as you each grow in different directions with different experiences.
